This is the easiest most effective elk call you can use if you are a novice hunter or even an experienced archery / rifle elk hunter.  

This is a great call to use early in the pre-rut and post rut because of the simplicity of the sound has a calming effect on the elk.  

This call is also an effective tool for stopping an elk for a shot.  They'll stop and stare at you for up to a full minute in search of their companion.  Don't move!
