I Want the Best Crispi Boot
The other day, a customer came into our gear shop and asked: "What's the best Crispi Boot?" "If only it were that simple, we wouldn't have 15 boots on the wall," I replied.
Crispi makes a variety of boots for a variety of hunters. Each boot is constructed using different outsoles, midsoles, materials, upper construction, support, flexibility, etc. So there isn't a simple answer; it really depends on a variety of factors including terrain type, weight applied to the boot, temperature, foot shape, user preference, and a few other factors. This short article will speak to generalities, but keep your preferences in mind when choosing a boot.
Stiffness
Boot stiffness generally refers to the rigidity of the sole. Generally speaking, the steeper the terrain, the stiffer the boot. But keep in mind that even if you are hunting or hiking in steep country, your navigation through that country may not be in steep terrain. If you're scaling scree slopes or navigating avalanche chutes and gnarly mountains, a stiff boot will be your friend.
Support
Support refers to ankle support, and supportiveness of the midsole to provide a stable platform. Stiffer boots often provide better support throughout the boot, but a big part of supportiveness in the Crispi lineup has to do with Crispi's ABSS (Ankle Bone Support System). Supportiveness is paramount as load weights increase. If you're carrying heavy packs, packing out quarters, or are a larger person, a more supportive boot is a great choice. On the other hand, lightweight, flexible boots can be your best friend in situations where you're moving a lot, trying to move quickly and quietly.
Insulation
When the weather is cold, or you are a stationary hunter in a blind, treestand, or saddle, insulation during the later months is an important factor to consider. Crispi boots like the Guide GTX and the Briksdal Pro feature insulation, but it's only 200 grams, so they are great mid-late season boots, whether you're hiking or stationary, which most western hunts have a mix of both. For early to mid-season, an uninsulated boot makes a lot of sense. This can also vary hunter-to-hunter depending on comfort and personal preference.
Breathability
Breathability is important in all boots because overheating is not fun. A breathable boot can cool off and remove moisture created by your feet. Just like in jackets and pants, breathability creates versatility in a boot. For hunters who hike, then stop and glass, and then hike again, versatility is important, and moderation of moisture and temperature are vital to staying comfortable. Synthetic boots are generally more breathable than full-grain leather boots.
Waterproof
A waterproof liner is an important part of a boot for hunters because they often encounter moisture, whether it be morning dew, creek crossings, snow, or rainfall. It’s paramount that hunters can continue to have dry and warm feet in wet environments. Fortunately, Crispi boots include a Gore-TEX liner and provide superior waterproofing and breathability not found in many waterproof lining products.
Weight
Weight is a crucial factor when choosing a hunting boot, as it can significantly impact your comfort and endurance in the field. Lightweight boots are often preferred by hunters who cover long distances or need to move quickly and quietly. They reduce fatigue, allowing you to stay on the move for longer periods without feeling weighed down. Crispi offers several lightweight models that don't compromise on support or durability, making them an excellent choice for active hunters.
On the other hand, heavier boots tend to provide more support and protection, which is beneficial when navigating rugged terrain or carrying heavy loads. For hunts that involve heavy packs and challenging terrains, a sturdier, heavier boot might be the better choice. Ultimately, the right balance of weight, support, and comfort will keep you effective and comfortable throughout your hunting adventures.

Are Crispi Boots Still a Good Choice?
After years of selling and fitting Crispi boots—and at one point stocking 14 different models—we have a lot of firsthand experience with the lineup.
Crispi makes some very good hunting boots. But the biggest lesson we learned selling hundreds of pairs is that there isn't one "best" hunting boot or even one brand that's right for every hunter.
Fit comes first. After that, consider the terrain you hunt, the weight you carry, how much ankle and underfoot support you prefer, temperature, waterproofing, and how many miles you typically cover.
